Haines: Arrival and information
Haines's ferry terminal is five miles north of town, with a daily service to and from Juneau and Skagway. Local taxis meet all ferry arrivals; downtown costs $5. Two private ferry operators, Haines-Skagway Water Taxi (tel 1-888/766-3395) and Chilkat Cruises (tel 1-888/766-2103), undertake the one-hour run up the fjord to Skagway for around $36 round-trip.From town, the Haines Highway runs 151 miles to the Alaska Highway in Canada; a weekly minivan service, by RC Shuttles (tel 907/479-0079 or 1-877/479-0079, ), runs routes to Fairbanks (from Fairbanks on Mon, from Haines on Tues; $130 to Fairbanks).
The visitor center , at Second and Willard (summer Mon-Fri 8am-8pm Sat & Sun 10am-4pm; rest of year Mon-Fri 8am-5pm; tel 907/766-2234 or 1-800/458-3579, ), has all kinds of maps and information.
