Homer: Eating and drinking
Not surprisingly, Homer's culinary scene focuses most on fresh fish. For nightlife , head out to a colorful bar or to the relaxed Pier One Theater (May-Sept; tel 907/235-7333), next to the fishing hole on the Spit.Cactus Café The Spit tel 907/235-0721. Great take-out café with some outdoor seating for tucking into your halibut burrito ($6), ginger curry tofu wrap ($6), fruit smoothie ($3.50) or espresso. Closed Sun.
Café Cups 162 Pioneer Ave tel 907/235-8330. Relaxing yet vibrant café serving some of the best coffee and great sandwiches and salads.
Two Sisters Espresso/Bakery 106 W Bunnell Ave tel 907/235-2280. Great little spot for that morning coffee either in the diminutive bakery or at tables out on the small deck. Good too for pizza, soups and quiches at moderate prices.
The Homestead Mile 8.2 East Rd tel 907/235-8723. Open for dinner nightly for crab-and-shrimp cakes ($13) followed by Mediterranean pasta ($20), half a pound of King crab ($23) or sautéed scallops ($21).
Lands End Resort at the end of the Spit tel 907/235-0400 or 1-800/478-0400. Plush and pricey restaurant offering an absolutely wonderful view of the bay. Breakfast is a must.
Salty Dawg The Spit. No self-respecting drinker should pass up a few jars in the Dawg with its dark interior, life preservers pinned to the wall, and what is reliably claimed to be the only surveyors' benchmark located in a bar in the US.
