Ketchikan: Eating and drinking
Inexpensive food in Ketchikan tends to be rather good, a rare combination in Alaska. The place is also renowned for its hard drinking . Steer clear of the First City Tavern , a favorite with commercial fishers and cannery workers eager to forget the sight and smell of raw fish.Annabelle's Keg & Chowder House 326 Front St tel 907/225-6009. Classy but relaxed atmosphere. Good espresso, sourdough pancakes and seafood at moderate to high prices.
Arctic Bar 509 Water St. Basic, dark boozing bar with a great view over the water once the cruise ships have left.
Diaz Chinese Restaurant 335 Stedman St tel 907/225-2257. Great inexpensive diner food with some tasty Filipino dishes.
Pizza Mill 808 Water St tel 907/225-6646. Ketchikan's oldest pizza joint is a great low-key place for gourmet pizzas (known here as Yuppie Pies; from $10 for a 12-inch), subs, burgers ($6-8), burritos ($6-7), salads and draft beer. No credit cards.
Steamers 76 Front St tel 907/225-1600. Large, bustling restaurant opposite the cruise-ship dock with great views and seafood to match - not to mention a well-stocked bar with a plethora of beers on tap and occasional live music.
