Birmingham: Arrival, information and getting around
Birmingham Airport
is just three miles from downtown; call Yellow Cabs ($12) at 205/252-1131. Amtrak pulls in at 1819 Morris Ave, downtown, and the Greyhound station is at 19th Street N, between Sixth and Seventh avenues - a rough area at night. Public transportation is poor, and most of the attractions are well spread out, so you'll need a car to see the city properly. The
visitor center
can be found at 2200 Ninth Ave N (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm; tel 205/458-8000 or 1-800/458-8085,
). The city has two free listings magazines:
The Birmingham Weekly
and the bi-weekly
Black and White
.
