Mobile: Practicalities
Downtown Mobile is somewhat under the shadow of I-10, as it sweeps to meet I-65 a few miles west. Amtrak, 11 Government St, and Greyhound, at no. 2545, are both central. Mobile's resourceful visitor center , located in Fort Conde, 150 S Royal St (daily 8am-5pm; tel 334/434-7304, ), can provide valuable accommodation discount vouchers. Downtown, the Lafayette Plaza is a very central fifteen-story round tower at 301 Government St (tel 334/694-0100, fax 334/694-0160; $50-75), while the Malaga Inn , 359 Church St (tel 334/438-4701; $75-100), is an 1862 twin townhouse with huge rooms and serving continental breakfast.Unsurprisingly, Mobile abounds in places to eat fish : Wintzels' Oyster House , 605 Dauphin St (tel 334/432-4605), serves good-value seafood platters and fresh oysters in a determinedly eccentric atmosphere, while Gus's at no. 751 (tel 334/433-4877) has an array of seafood and steaks at reasonable prices. At night, downtown Mobile is largely deserted with the exception of a few blocks of Dauphin Street; The Bicycle Shop , at no. 661 is a popular pub with a laid-back atmosphere and an extensive drink selection. However, if your mood is a little more alternative, look to Grand Central , 256 Dauphin St, where an array of eclectic bands play nightly for no cover charge.
