US-89A threads its way south from Flagstaff down the spectacular Oak Creek Canyon to emerge after 28 miles at Sedona , on the threshold of the extraordinary Red Rock Country . Up from the valley rise giant mesas and buttes of stark red sandstone, where Zane Grey set a number of his Wild West adventures. The boom-and-bust mining town of Jerome looks down from a mountainside to the south, while back beside I-17 toward Phoenix are further haunting Sinagua ruins.
