As few of the side roads around Sedona are paved - in part because the town's ardent libertarians would not pay the necessary taxes - there's a booming business in off-road tours , run by companies such as Earth Wisdom Tours ($42 and up; tel 928/282-4714 or 1-800/482-4714), who teach their clients "the ancestral secrets of the Medicine Wheel," and the garish Pink Jeep Tours ($32-75; tel 928/282-5000 or 1-800/873-3662, ). Nonetheless, a lot of the best scenery is visible from the highway, and many of the jeep roads are perfectly passable in ordinary vehicles. So long as you're happy to remain in ignorance as to which rocks are really electromagnetic tuning forks vibrating in harmony with Alpha Centauri, there's no great need to take a commercial tour. At Legends of Sedona Ranch (tel 928/282-6826 or 1-800/848-7728), where "horses are free … but rides ain't," an hour on horseback costs around $40.
