Grand Canyon: Getting to the Canyon

Nearly all visitors make their way to the South Rim by heading north of I-17 from either Williams (58 miles south) or Flagstaff (81 miles southeast). Most of the route is through thick ponderosa pine forests, so the ride up from Williams on the restored steam trains of the Grand Canyon Railway is not especially scenic (departs Williams daily 10am; from $55 round-trip; tel 928/773-1976 or 1-800/843-8724, ). We've listed details of buses from Flagstaff, for connecting with Amtrak's rail service.

The small airport at Tusayan - six miles from the South Rim, and used primarily by "flight-seeing" tour companies - also welcomes scheduled services, especially from Las Vegas, with operators such as Scenic Airlines (from $60 one-way; tel 702/739-1900 or 1-800/634-6801, ).
