Flagstaff: Arrival and information
As the nearest town of any size to the Grand Canyon , seventy miles northwest, Flagstaff remains a major junction for road and rail passengers. Daily Amtrak trains heading both east and west pull in at the station in the very center of town, part of which doubles as a very helpful visitor center (Mon-Sat 7am-6pm, Sun 7am-5pm; tel 928/774-9541 or 1-800/842-7293, ). At the time of writing, the company that previously ran bus connections to the Grand Canyon ceased operations; contact the visitor center to see whether, as planned, they've arranged an alternative shuttle service. The least expensive car rental is Budget Rent-a-Car, 100 N Humphreys St (tel 928/779-0307); Avis, Hertz and National also have outlets.
