Flagstaff: Eating and nightlife
There's enough money around in Flagstaff to support several upscale restaurants , while the area around San Francisco Street, both north and south of the tracks, must be the liveliest nightspot between Las Vegas and Santa Fe, filled with vegetarian cafés, espresso bars and pubs.Alpine Pizza 7 N Leroux St tel 928/779-4109. Raucous student hangout downtown, with decent pizzas and lots of beer.
Beaver Street Brewery & Whistle Stop Café 11 S Beaver St tel 928/779-0079. Inventive sandwiches and salads, wood-fired pizzas, and outdoor bar-becue in the beer garden in summer.
Black Barts 2760 E Butler Ave tel 928/779-3142. Enjoyable Western-themed steakhouse on the east edge of town, with a delicious smell of burning wood, and waiting staff who sing and dance on stage in between serving up barbecued steaks, ribs and chickens, for $15-20.
Café Espress 16 N San Francisco St tel 928/774-0541. Great vegetarian breakfasts, then salads, sandwiches and veggie specials for the rest of the day, plus espresso coffees.
Downtown Diner 7 E Aspen Ave tel 928/774-3492. Classic Route 66 diner a block north of the main drag, featuring leatherette booths and hefty burgers and sandwichs.
Flagstaff Brewing Company 16 E I-40 tel 928/773-1442. Popular downtown pub, with outdoor seating, big windows, and live music Wed-Sat.
Macy's European Coffee House & Bakery 14 S Beaver St tel 928/774-2243. Not merely superb coffee, but heavenly pastries to go with it, plus more substantial vegetarian dishes such as black bean pizza, and even couscous for breakfast.
The Museum Club 3404 E I-40 tel 928/526-9434. A real oddity; this log-cabin taxidermy museum somehow transmogrified into a classic Route 66 roadhouse, saloon and country music venue, that's a second home to hordes of dancing cowboys.
