The towering
eastern
peaks of the
High Sierra
drop abruptly to the empty landscape of the
Owens Valley
, sixty miles west of Death Valley. Almost the entire range is wilderness: well-maintained roads lead to trailheads at over ten thousand feet, providing access to the stark terrain of spires, glaciers and clear mountain lakes. US-395 is the lifeline of the area connecting several small towns, all with plenty of budget motels. Because the long-standing US-395 Greyhound service was cancelled in late-2001 you will really need a car to explore fully.
