East Bay: Arrival, information and getting around
Flights direct to the East Bay touch down at
Oakland Airport
, just outside town. The AirBART Shuttle van ($2; every 15min) runs to the Coliseum BART station, and there are also door-to-door shuttle buses such as BayPorter Express ($15-19; tel 415/467-1800 or 1-877/467-1800). The
Greyhound
station is in a dodgy part of northern Oakland on San Pablo Avenue at 21st Street.
Amtrak
terminates at Second Street near Jack London Square in West Oakland, but a better option is to get off at Richmond and change onto the ultramodern
BART
trains. Three of these underground lines link San Francisco with the East Bay (fares $2.75-3.10; Mon-Fri 4am-midnight, Sat 6am-midnight, Sun 8am-midnight), heading their separate ways from downtown Oakland. The revamped AC Transit (tel 510/839-2882) buses cover the entire East Bay area, with a more limited service running to Oakland and Berkeley from the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco.
There are
visitor centers
at 550 Tenth St near the 12th Street BART station in downtown Oakland (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm; tel 510/839-9000,
), and in Berkeley at 2015 Center St (Mon-Fri 9am-12.30pm and 1.30-5pm; tel 510/549-7040,
).
