Location. The Carter House Inns, an enclave of four homes overlooking Humboldt Bay, are located in the Old Town district of Eureka, Calif. The Carson Mansion, positioned two blocks from the inn, is known for its eclectic and daunting mix of architectural styles, and was designed by the renowned San Francisco architects Samuel and Joseph Newsom, who also designed the Carter House.
Features. This collection of homes includes the Hotel Carter, Carter House and two cottages. These Victorian-style inns offer expansive gardens, ornate moldings, large windows and hand-crafted trim work. Complimentary two- course breakfasts, afternoon wine and hors d'oeuvres, and evening teas are served daily. Restaurant 301, located in the lobby of Hotel Carter, offers an a la carte menu and five-course "Discovery Menu," including oysters, herbed crepes and Brioche Ravioli. All meals utilize ingredients collected from the inn's garden, and are complemented with a selection of fine wines. In-room massages are available for a fee.

Guestrooms. Guestrooms at the Carter House Inns feature rich fabrics, original artwork by local artists and fresh flowers. All accommodations include private bathrooms. Turndown service is provided. Grand suites, queen suites, family suites and guestrooms are located in the hotel or Carter House, and the Carter Cottage occupies a separate, turn-of-the-century Victorian. Complimentary high-speed Internet access, CD stereos and VCRs are provided. Select rooms offer jetted tubs. The Carter Cottage includes a canopy bed, two-person jetted tub, kitchen and an enclosed deck with a fountain.

Expert Tip. The property's gardens have become a venue for horticultural education, and house organic gardening seminars, lecture series, and interpretive tours given by the inn's master gardener. Guests are invited to join in the afternoon harvests to help collect produce for use in the restaurant's meals.
