Throughout the last century the Everglades' boundaries were steadily pushed back by urban development, and EVERGLADES NATIONAL PARK bestows federal protection to only a comparatively small section around Florida's southeastern corner. In the park, the vital links holding the Everglades together become apparent: the all-important cycle of wet and dry seasons; the ability of alligators to discover water; the tree islands that provide sanctuaries for animals during the floods; and the forces, such as human demands for farmland and fresh water, that threaten to tear them apart.
