USA: Driveaways

One variation on renting is a driveaway : you drive a car from one place to another for the owner, paying only for the gas you use. The same rules as for renting apply, but look the car over before you take it; you'll be charged for any repair costs in addition to a large fuel bill if it's a big drinker. Some driveaway companies want a personal reference from someone either in the town you're leaving or in the car's eventual destination. Get in touch in advance, to spare yourself a week's wait for a car to turn up. The most common routes are between the coasts, but there's a fair chance of finding something that needs transporting to where you want to go. You needn't drive flat out, although four hundred miles a day is expected. Look under Automobile Transporters in the Yellow Pages and phone around for current offers, or try one of the sixty branches of Auto Driveaway, 310 S Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL 60604 (tel 312/341-1900, ).
