Amana Colonies: Practicalities

Conventional addresses are seldom used in the Amana Colonies, but points of interest are well signposted. The visitor center , near the junction of Hwy-151 and Hwy-220 (Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10am-5pm; tel 319/622-7622 or 1-800/245-5465, ), hosts evening theater five nights a week ($19.50) and has details of B&Bs such as Judy's Guest Haus (tel 319/622-3599; $50-75), a restored 1890 colony home in the heart of Amana. Across the road from the visitor center are tent spaces at the Amana Colonies RV Park (tel 319/622-7616; $10 per tent site).

Probably the most compelling reason to visit the colonies is their undeniably excellent old-style German food. Apple-cheeked serving staff at the Amana Barn Restaurant (tel 319/622-3214) in Amana village dish up huge portions of country ham, beef schnitzel and the like, with pickled baby vegetables; for a lighter snack, call in at Hahn's Hearth Oven Bakery in Middle Amana (tel 319/622-3439). South Amana's Market Place Restaurant (tel 319/622-3225) offers sausages galore. As alcohol is not proscribed, some eating establishments, like the Ronnenberg Restaurant and Bar (tel 319/622-3641), are also popular for locally produced wine.
