To drivers on the interstates,
southern Idaho
appears to consist of little more than miles of vegetable fields and a few rocky or sandy desert stretches; only state capital
Boise
provides any urban interest. A trip into the interior along US-20, however, brings you to the spectacular ragged outcrops of the
Sawtooth Mountains
. During summer, the much-hyped
Sun Valley
ski resort is a good base for mountain bikers, rafters and hikers, and has the best bars and restaurants in this remote zone - in winter it has the most glitzy ski scene in the northern Rockies.
