Chicago: Theater and comedy

While it was once every Chicago actor's and playwright's ambition to end up in New York, many are now quite content to remain here. The city now supports numerous theater companies, many of them - notably Steppenwolf, John Malkovich's former company, at 1650 N Halsted St (tel 312/335-1888, ) - with reputations as good as any in the US. Notable Chicago theaters include the Court Theater, 5535 S Ellis St (tel 773/753-4472), and Goodman Theater, 200 S Columbus Ave (tel 312/443-3800). Comedy , too, is particularly vibrant; Chicago's improvisational scene is considered the best in the nation, with the troupe at Second City, 1231 N Wells St (tel 312/337-3992, ), especially renowned.
