Galena: Practicalities
The 1857 Railroad Museum, across the river from the town proper at 101 Bouthillier St, serves as the local visitor center (Mon-Thurs 9am-5pm, Fri & Sat 9am-7pm, Sun 10am-5pm; tel 815/777-4390), and provides the most convenient short-term parking lot.The plush DeSoto House Hotel , 230 S Main St (tel 815/777-0090 or 1-800/343-6562, ; $160-200), was Grant's campaign headquarters in 1868. Its grand Generals' Restaurant serves steak and seafood dinners. If your budget won't stretch that far, the Triangle Motel , at highways 20 and 84 (tel 877/425-3629; $50-75), makes a good-value alternative. As for inexpensive spots to eat , Boone's Place , 305 S Main St (tel 815/777-4488), is a reliable espresso and sandwich bar.
