Dodge City: Practicalities
Greyhound buses from Wichita arrive twice daily at 2405 W Wyatt Earp Blvd. Amtrak comes right into downtown, to the historic and renovated Santa Fe Station at Central Avenue and Wyatt Earp Boulevard. The CVB at Third St and Wyatt Earp Boulevard (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm; tel 620/225-8186 or 1-800/OLD-WEST, ) can offer advice on tourist activities; they also have a visitor center at 400 W Wyatt Earp Blvd (summer 8.30am-6.30pm; winter Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm). The Dodge City Trolley runs narrated town tours four times a day from a booth on the Boot Hill parking lot ($5). You can use the internet at the Public Library, 1001 2nd Ave (tel 620/225-0248).Most of Dodge City's motels are strung out roughly a mile west of downtown along US-50, still known here as Wyatt Earp Boulevard. The Astro at no. 2200 (tel 620/227-8146; $35-50) is inexpensive but a little noisy, and offers free rides to the train and bus stations; the Dodge House at no. 2408 (tel 620/225-9900; $50-130) has a reliable restaurant. The Econo Lodge at no. 1610 has an indoor pool and sauna area (tel 620/225-0231; $35-75). Camping is an option even for the car-less: the lakeside Water Sports Campground Recreation , 500 Cherry St (tel 620/225-8004; $6 tent sites), lies ten blocks south of Front Street. If you feel like bustin' your own bronco, head for the Marchel Ranch , 10873 W Hwy-50 (tel 620/227-7307 or 877/631-6196, ), a small ranch offering horse rides, chuckwagon dinners and cozy rooms.
As for food , Café at the Plaza , 100 Military Ave (tel 620/227-6151), doesn't have much in the way of atmosphere, but the roast beef sandwiches and soups are pretty good and reasonably priced. Peppercorns , out near the motels at 1301 W Wyatt Earp Blvd (tel 620/225-2335), is a conventional highway steakhouse with meals for about $13.
