Amtrak comes into Lawrence at 413 E 7th St, and Greyhound arrives at 2447 W 6th St. The kitsch Fifties-style Lawrence Bus Co runs local buses. The visitor center is north of downtown in the renovated Union Pacific Depot at N 2nd and Locust streets (Mon-Sat 8.30am-5.30pm, Sun 1-5pm; tel 785/865-4499 or 1-888/LAWKANS, ). You can find internet terminals at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vermont St or Café Nova (tel 785/841-3282) at 745 New Hampshire St.Adequate but dull budget rooms can be found near the bus station at the Virginia Inn , 2907 W 6th St (tel 785/843-6611; $50-75), while the Super 8 at 515 McDonald Drive (tel 913/842-5721; $50-75) is a reliable fall-back. If you have a little extra cash, head instead to the lovely all-suite Eldridge Hotel , at 7th and Massachusetts streets (tel 785/749-5011 or 1-800/527-0909; $100-130/$130-160); twice burned down by pro-slavery forces, it has been restored to an evocative faded elegance, and houses the stylish Shalor's restaurant (tel 785/749-1005) and the atmospheric Jayhawker bar in the lobby. You can camp near downtown at KOA , 1473 Hwy-40 (tel 785/842-3877; $20 per tent site), or three miles out along W 23rd Street at Clinton Lake State Park, where the vehicle fee is $5 and a tent site $6.50 (tel 785/842-8562).
