Baltimore: City transportation

Because the city is so compact - everything of interest is within a mile of the center - you could get around quite happily on foot. A water taxi nips between the Inner Harbor and more than forty area attractions, including the National Aquarium, Fell's Point, the Civil War Museum and Canton (April-Oct Mon-Fri 10am-11pm, Sat & Sun 10am-midnight; Nov-March Mon-Fri 11am-6pm, Sat & Sun 10am-11pm; all-day pass $5 - includes a trolley ride to Fort McHenry; tel 410/563-3901 or 1-800/658-8947). Several other operators run harbor cruises , including the one-hour George's Island (daily April-Oct; 11.30am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm; $9, children $5), which docks near the visitor center. The city-operated MTA bus, subway and light-rail system ($1.35, day passes $3; tel 410/539-5000) covers many locations, including the airport, and runs from 6am (8am at weekends) until midnight. On buses, have exact change ready. Taxi companies include Yellow Cab (tel 410/685-1212) and Royal Cab (tel 410/327-0330).
