Baltimore: Drinking and nightlife
Baltimore's waterfront Fell's Point neighborhood may well have the densest assembly of drinking places in the US. One bar after another lines up along Broadway and the many smaller side streets; almost all feature some sort of entertainment, usually live bands, and on summer nights the sidewalks are packed solid with revelers. Those tired of long wait lines are now heading to the up-and-coming area around Canton , which offers plenty of venues - and more space - for the thirsty. Buddies Jazz Pub 313 N Charles St tel 410/332-4200. Evening jazz in this downtown location, for the price of a drink or two.
Cat's Eye Pub 1730 Thames St tel 410/276-9085. Cozy, crowded bar, with a good range of beers and live music nightly.
Eight by Ten 10 E Cross St tel 410/625-2000. Just west of Inner Harbor, this Federal Hill joint puts on live bands every night, with the emphasis on indie rock and reggae.
Looney's Pub 2900 O'Donnell St tel 410/675-9235. This animated hangout, serving up a variety of snacks and beers, is one of Canton's most popular watering holes.
Max's on Broadway 735 S Broadway tel 410/675-6297. Huge corner venue with a very long bar, pool tables, and a rainbow of beer taps. Upstairs is a more refined atmosphere in the leather upholstered cigar lounge. Live bands play occasionally.
Mount Royal Tavern 1204 W Mount Royal Ave tel 410/669-6686. Welcoming bar, popular with art students as well as nightcapping musicians.
