Scenic Hwy-31 skims along Lake Michigan and through Charlevoix and other pretty lakeside towns on its way north from Traverse City. The northern tip of the peninsula is occupied by the much improved Mackinaw City , where ferries take excursionists to much-hyped Mackinac Island - billboards advertise its attractions for fifty miles before you arrive.
