Detroit: Classical music, theater and opera

Most of Detroit's major arts venues are handily grouped together in the northwest sector of downtown. A sweeping staircase and giant chandeliers are part of the splendor of the new Detroit Opera House , 1526 Broadway (tel 313/237-7464). Close by, the Music Hall Center for Performing Arts , 350 Madison Ave (tel 313/963-7622, ), is the primary venue for dance in the city and also promotes rock concerts, youth theater and Broadway shows. In the Theater District, the gorgeous Fox Theatre , 2211 Woodward Ave (tel 313/983-6611), is the biggest draw, hosting the big Broadway shows, while the cozy 450-seater Gem Theatre , 333 Madison Ave (tel 313/963-9800, ), and the Masonic Temple Theatre , nearby at 500 Temple St (tel 313/832-2232, ), a hall with near-perfect acoustics, are also worth a visit. A little further on toward the Cultural Center, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra performs at the Orchestra Hall , 3711 Woodward Ave (tel 313/576-5100).
