Barbecue , once the unfashionable food of the poor, is big news in Kansas City - cheap, cheerful, hickory-smoked and served with tasty sauces. The Country Club Plaza has some great places, but they tend to be overpriced and some require formal dress. The restaurants in Crown Center and around Westport are more casual.Arthur Bryant's 1727 Brooklyn Ave tel 816/231-1123. The place for barbecue, a mile east of downtown in a desolate area. Serving the largest portions you've ever seen of barbecue and beans; the combo plate easily feeds two hefty appetites. This is serious business - be sure not to dawdle in the queue, as novices are given short shrift.
Gates Bar-B-Q 3201 Main St tel 816/753-0828. Massive portions of BBQ served on platters in a family style atmosphere.
Hereford House 20th and Main streets tel 816/842-1080. KC's top steak house, in a handy downtown spot.
Jerusalem Café 431 Westport Rd tel 816/756-2770. Small Middle Eastern restaurant serving superb falafel and kebabs.
LaMar's Donuts 240 E Linewood Blvd tel 800/533-7489. A KC institution, now with branches in several states; this one is the original.
Lidia's 101 W 22nd St tel 816/221-3722. Popular spot housed in an old freight house. Excellent pastas and an extensive wine selection - at affordable prices.
River Market Brewing Company 500 Walnut St tel 816/471-6300. A billiards room and full bar are added attractions to the American-style menu and house brew. Located near City Market.
Stroud's 1015 E 85th St tel 816/333-2132. Classic roadhouse, a long way southeast of downtown, and renowned for its fried chicken. A favorite with Rush Limbaugh among others.
The Cup and Saucer 412B Deleware St tel 816/474-7375. A unique sandwich and coffee shop that transforms into a bar by night, where weekend jazz jams are popular.
