Sixteen miles north of Helena off I-15, you can take a two-hour
boat tour
through the
Gates of the Mountains
(daily June-Sept; tel 406/458-5241; $8.50). This dramatic stretch of the Missouri River, which enters a gorge between sheer 1200ft cliffs that rise abruptly from the northern shores of a tranquil lake, was named by Meriwether Lewis (of the Lewis and Clark expedition). This area offers excellent hiking and backpacking opportunities. The Helena National Forest Office (tel 406/449-5201) can provide maps and local
camping
information.
