Missoula: Bars and entertainment
When Milo Milodragonovitch, the heavy-drinking, coke-snorting private eye in James Crumley's Dancing Bear , was left battered and bleeding miles from Missoula, he was consoled by the knowledge that he would soon be back in what he considered to be "the town with the best bars in a state of great bars." It's hard to argue with either claim. Pick up a copy of the weekly Independent or Friday's Missoulian for local happenings and live music listings.The bar Milodragonovitch uses as an impromptu office is based on Charley B's , 428 N Higgins St - a dark but lively no-frills local now known as the Dinosaur Café. The Blue Heron Club , 140 W Pine St (tel 406/543-2525), is Missoula's newest and coolest live music venue, usually featuring the Northwest's better rock and indie bands. Also worth checking out are The Oxford Saloon , 337 N Higgins St (tel 406/549-0117), a Montana institution and a friendly joint with as varied a clientele as any bar in Montana, and the Rhinoceros , 158 Ryman St (tel 406/721-6061), which serves over fifty beers from around the world.
