Chapel Hill: Practicalities
Greyhound buses stop downtown at 138 E Franklin St in front of the Carolina Coffee Shop. There's a downtown welcome center at 179 E Franklin St (Tues-Sat 10am-4pm, tel 919/929-9700, ) or, if that's closed, you can try the Chapel Hill/Orange County visitors bureau at 501 W Franklin, (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm; tel 1-888/968-2060, ). Chapel Hill has few places to stay , and is often booked up; one of the most popular spots is the 1920s The Carolina Inn at 211 Pittsboro St, on campus (tel 919/933-2001, fax 919/962-3400, ; $160-200). The Hampton Inn , 1740 Hwy-15/501 (tel 919/968-3000, fax 919/929-0322; $75-100), is a comfortable motel just out of town.For food , Crooks Corner , 610 W Franklin St (tel 919/929-7643), serves cordon bleu Southern cooking such as shrimp and grits or fried chicken and greens in smart surroundings. Four Eleven West , 411 W Franklin St (tel 919/967-2782), is an excellent modern Italian restaurant. One of the best breakfast spots is Elmo's Diner , in the Carr Mill Mall in Carrboro at 200 N Greensboro St (tel 919/929-2909). Adjacent to the mall is the community-owned Weaver Street Market , 101 E Weaver St (tel 919/929-0010), featuring an inexpensive, tasty vegetarian buffet where you pay by the weight. For Chapel Hill nightlife , stay on Franklin Street: The Cave , 452 W Franklin St (tel 919/968-9308), has live music from bluegrass to indie, with Local 506 , 506 W Franklin St (tel 919/942-5506), the next step up. Over in Carrboro, the Cat's Cradle , 300 E Main St (tel 919/967-9053), has a reputation for booking the best bands on the national touring circuit, while the cozy 300-seater ArtsCenter, 300-G E Main St (tel 919/929-2787), stages plays, dance shows and concerts.
