Location. Surrounded by towering magnolia, pecan and camellia trees, the New Berne House Inn is located in the historic district of New Bern, N.C. Tryon Palace, located one block from the inn, was built between 1767 and 1770, and features a 19-room museum, four additional landmark homes and gardens. New Bern, the second oldest town in the state, offers over 150 historic landmarks. The town lies between the Neuse and Trent Rivers, both within six blocks of the inn. Downtown New Bern offers restaurants, antique shops, museums and historic tours within a few blocks from the inn.
Features. This red-brick, Colonial revival inn, built in 1922, features the original wallpaper in the main foyer that was chosen in the 1930s and the staircase that runs all the way to the third floor. All of the rooms are furnished with antiques. Full, complimentary breakfasts are served each morning in the dining room. Lunch and dinner are available by special request. Afternoon tea, desserts, fruit and non-alcoholic beverages are offered each day. Wine and cheese are served each evening. The period rooms at the inn include a library with a fireplace and a parlor. The back porch offers white wicker furniture and a porch swing. A tandem bicycle is available for guests' use.
Guestrooms. Seven guestrooms with private bathrooms are located on three floors. Two of the rooms feature fireplaces. The main floor guestroom was the original sun parlor. Four guestrooms are located on the second floor, and two attic rooms are offered on the third floor.
Expert Tip. Tryon Palace, around the corner from the inn, was known as one of the most beautiful homes in Colonial America. This Georgian-style mansion served as the Capitol of the Colony of North Carolina and the home of Royal Governor William Tryon. Restored to its original 18th-century glory, the mansion is now home to an extensive collection of antiques and art. Tours are conducted by docents in period costumes. The grounds offer gardens from English formal gardens and kitchen gardens to wilderness garden areas. Four contrasting historic homes are also located on the property.
