Family restaurants and fast-food places line the main drags of major centers such as North Woodstock and North Conway. The best places are in less conspicuous areas and worth rooting out. Some of the hotels and B&Bs recommended also serve food.

Polly's Pancake Parlor I-93 exit 38, Hwy-117, Sugar Hill tel 603/823-5575. Yes, it's in the middle of nowhere, but it's a scenic nowhere and well worth the schlep if you love pancakes.

Red Parka Pub US-302, Glen tel 603/383-4344. Evening-only steakhouse with bar until 1am and live rock music at weekends.

Thompson House Eatery Hwy-16A, Jackson tel 603/383-9341. Huge portions of very reasonably priced American comfort food.

Truant's Taverne Main St, North Woodstock tel 603/745-2239. Cozy, affordable restaurant, serving well-cooked American grill fare for under $15 a plate.
