Hiking in the mountains is coordinated by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC), whose chain of information centers, hostels and huts along the Appalachian Trail, traverse the region from northeast to southwest; ring 603/466-2727 or 1-800/262-4455 for further information, and pick up a copy of the AMC White Mountain Guide ($21.95) before you attempt any serious expedition. Downhill and cross-country skiers can choose from several resorts that double up as summertime activity centers. Both Loon Mountain (tel 603/745-8111 or 1-800/229-LOON, ) and Bretton Woods Mountain Resort (tel 603/278-3300, ) keep the chair lifts open through summer, and offer decent mountain-bike trails as well as rollerblading and horseback riding. General information on the skiing centers along I-93 is available from Ski NH (PO Box 10, North Woodstock, NH 03262; tel 603/745-9396, ); those further east are covered by the very helpful Mount Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce on Hwy 16, North Conway (PO Box 2300, North Conway, NH 03860; tel 603/356-3171 or 1-800/367-3364, ). North Conway is the best place to rent equipment and other supplies.

Bikes can be rented from North Country Adventures on the Kancamagus Highway in Lincoln (tel 603/745-8600, ), from the Bretton Woods ski resort on Hwy-302, or from Joe Jones on Main Street in North Conway (tel 603/356-9411, ).
