Immediately east of Fifth Avenue lies Madison Avenue , a strip that was entirely residential until the 1920s. Today it is mainly an elegant shopping street, lined with top-notch designer clothes stores, some of whose doors are kept locked. The only key sight along its Upper East Side stretch is the Whitney Museum.
