The city's northernmost borough, The Bronx , was for a long time believed to be its toughest and most notoriously crime-ridden district - and presented as such in films like Fort Apache, the Bronx and books like Bonfire of the Vanities , even after urban renewal was underway. Indeed, there was no other part of the city about which people were so ready to roll out their most gruesome horror stories. Nowadays its poorer reaches still suffer from severe urban deprivation, but almost all of the borough has undergone a successful recent transformation.
