Niagara Falls: Arrival and information

Amtrak trains , en route between New York and Toronto, stop a long two miles from downtown at 27th Street and Lockwood Road. If you arrive at the bus station (tel 716/285-9319), on 4h Street and Niagara Street, you're next door to the official Welcome Center , 310 4th St (daily: July & Aug 9am-8pm; Sept-June 9am-5pm; tel 716/285-2400 or 1-800/338-7890, ). There's also a kiosk in Prospect Park by the falls, as well as countless other places in town that claim to be visitor centers but are in fact just fronts for tour companies.

Arriving by car , follow the signs to the main parking lot, which is right next to the falls and costs $5 - watch out for the helpful but unofficial rangers who'll steer you into privately owned, high-priced lots just outside the park. Local Metro Transit System buses (tel 716/285-9319) run to all areas of the city ($1.25) and to Buffalo (bus #40 or #60 express; $1.85 each way). To send the obligatory postcards, you'll need the post office at 615 Main St (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm, Sat 9am-noon; zip code 14302; tel 716/285-7561).
