New York City: West Village

A Salt and Battery 112 Greenwich Ave tel 212/691-2713.
Run by the Brits from Tea and Sympathy next door, and an authentic enough affair, with decent battered cod and plaice, great chips and mushy peas. However, it may be the most expensive chippie in the world, with a fish supper costing you a good twenty bucks.

Café Le Figaro 184 Bleecker St (at MacDougal St) tel 212/677-1100.
Former Beat hangout during the 1950s now ersatz Left Bank, serving cappuccino and pastries. If you want to watch weekend tourists flooding West Village streets, this is a good place to do it.

Caffè Dante 79 MacDougal St (between Bleecker and Houston sts) tel 212/982-5275.
A morning stop-off for many locals since 1915. Good cappuccino, double espresso and caffè alfredo with ice cream. Often jammed with NYU students and teachers.

Caffè Reggio 119 MacDougal St (between Bleecker and 3rd sts) tel 212/475-9557.
One of the first Village coffeehouses, dating back to the 1920s, always crowded and with tables outside for people- or tourist-watching in warm weather.

Elixir 523 Hudson St (between 10th and Charles sts) tel 212/352-9952; also in TriBeCa, 95 W Broadway (between Reade and Chambers sts) tel 212/233-6171.
Casual, friendly joint where you can order juices, smoothies, seasonal elixirs, or just park yourself and think healthy.

Magnolia Bakery 401 Bleecker St (at 11th St) tel 212/462-2572.
Like you've died and gone to cake heaven: huge slabs of moist crumbly cake, that homemade smell in the air, and staff frosting cakes while you watch. In addition to chocolate, vanilla, hummingbird (a mix of carrots, pineapple, coconut and nuts) and red velvet, there's banana pudding with wafer cookies and cupcakes.

Peanut Butter and Company 240 Sullivan St (at W 3rd) tel 212/677-3995.
This establishment serves up peanut butter, on sandwiches and otherwise, in ways you never imagined.

Tea and Sympathy 108 Greenwich Ave (between 12th and 13th sts) tel 212/807-8329.
Self-consciously British tearoom, serving an afternoon high tea full of traditional British staples like jam roly-poly and treacle pud, along with shepherd's pie and scones. Perfect for British tourists feeling homesick.

Village Delight 323 Bleecker St (between Christopher and Grove sts) tel 212/633-9275.
Healthy-sized sandwiches of whole turkey or roast beef (made daily), with an assortment of Middle Eastern side dishes.
