New York City: Chelsea

Amy's Bread 75 9th Ave (between 15th and 16th sts) tel 212/462-4338.
You can find Amy's Bread in fine stores citywide - but it's freshest here; they make great cakes, too.

Big Cup 228 8th Ave (between 21st and 22nd sts) tel 212/206-0059.
Popular coffee shop with fresh muffins and (big) hot cups of joe. Comfortable couches and chairs make it the perfect place to read the papers and relax into your day.

F&B 269 W 23rd St (between 7th and 8th aves) tel 646/486-4441.
Unusual premise and a chic (for a slender storefront) execution: all manner of franks (vegetarian too) and beignets (awesome with apricot dip), with fries of course. Humorous menu, and classy cheap joint. Eat-in or take-out.

News Bar 2 W 19th St (between 5th and 6th aves) tel 212/255-3996.
Tiny minimalist café with equally great selections of pastries and periodicals. Draws photographer and model types as well as regular people, making it good for people-watching.

Wild Lily Tea Room 511 W 22nd St (between 5th and 6th aves) tel 212/691-2258.
Convenient for a gallery tour of west Chelsea, the shop has over forty different brews, and strange-sounding but delicious tea sandwiches.
