New York City: Financial District and City Hall area

The culinary focal point of lower Manhattan is the Fulton Fish Market, so not surprisingly many of the restaurants in the area serve seafood. Unfortunately, with few exceptions, most overcharge the power-broker lunch regulars for relatively unimpressive fare. The area revolves around trading hours, so many restaurants close early, and are closed or have reduced hours on weekends.

AMERICAN AND CONTINENTAL

Bridge Café 279 Water St (at Dover St) tel 212/227-3344.
They say there's been a bar here since 1794, but this place looks very up-to-the-minute. The good crabcakes come from the local fish market, and there are plenty of upscale beers with which to wash them down. The rare eighteenth-century frame house, painted red with black trim, is well worth a look. Entrees are priced between $15-25.

Hudson River Club 4 World Financial Center, 250 Vesey St, Upper Level (at West St) tel 212/786-1500.
Worth the $70 or so per head for the view over the harbor to the Statue of Liberty. The food is American, with special emphasis on cooking from New York State's Hudson River Valley. Start with the seafood martini (shrimp, lobster and lump crabmeat with a citron aioli) or just go straight for the apricot-glazed halibut entree.

ITALIAN

Carmine's Bar and Grill 140 Beekman St (at Front St) tel 212/962-8606.
In business since 1903, this place specializes in Northern Italian-style seafood and exudes a comfortable if run-down ambience. Try a glass of the house wine and a bowl of linguini in clam sauce for lunch.
