New York City: Tribeca

Still one of New York's trendiest neighborhoods, here you often pay for the vista rather than the victuals. Yet who can argue with sitting outside at a sidewalk café and feeling like you've traveled (rather cheaply) to Europe? Even so, there are appropriately divine meals, and occasional deals, to be had in TriBeCa - and the people-watching is not bad either.

AMERICAN AND CONTINENTAL

Bubby's 120 Hudson St (between Franklin and N Moore sts) tel 212/219-0666.
A relaxed TriBeCa restaurant serving homely health-conscious American food. Great scones, mashed potatoes, rosemary chicken and soups. A good, moderately priced brunch spot, too - the trout and eggs is a killer.

Odeon 145 W Broadway (at Thomas St) tel 212/233-0507.
Odeon has shown surprising staying power, perhaps because the eclectic food choices are actually pretty good and the people-watching still can't be beat. Entrees go for around $15-20 and, on the whole, are worth it.

TriBeCa Grill 375 Greenwich St (at Franklin St) tel 212/941-3900.
Some people come for a glimpse of the owner, Robert de Niro, when they should really be concentrating on the fine American cooking with Asian and Italian accents at around $30 a main course. The setting is nice too; an airy, brick-walled eating area around a central Tiffany bar. Worth the money as a treat, despite the trendy scene and gawking tourists.

ASIAN

Nobu 105 Hudson St (at Franklin St) tel 212/219-0500.
Robert De Niro's best-known New York restaurant, whose lavish woodland decor complements really superlative Japanese cuisine, especially sushi, at the ultra-high prices you would expect. If you can't get a reservation, try Next Door Nobu , located just next door.

FRENCH AND BELGIAN

Bouley 165 Duane St (between Greenwich and Hudson sts) tel 212/608-3852.
One of New York's best French restaurants, serving modern French food made from the freshest ingredients. Popular with city celebrities, but costs for the magnificent meals can be softened by opting for the prix-fixe lunch and dinner options.

Capsouto Frères 451 Washington St (at Watts St) tel 212/966-4900.
Tucked away in a discreet corner of TriBeCa is this wonderful, if pricey, French bistro with a lofty feel. Dinner entrees are about $14-24. Try the duck with ginger and cassis, and don't miss the dessert soufflés.

MEXICAN

El Teddy's 219 W Broadway (between Franklin and White sts) tel 212/941-7070.
Eccentrically decorated restaurant that serves creative Mexican food, like goat cheese quesadillas, and the best margaritas in town. Try the fried tortillas wrapped around spicy chicken for starters. Entrees ($15-19) feel a bit pricey for what you get.
