New York City: Brooklyn

In Brooklyn , lower Atlantic Avenue offers some of the city's best Middle Eastern food, Brighton Beach features the most authentic Russian food in NYC, and Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill and Fort Greene all have burgeoning restaurant rows.

Al Di Là 248 5th Ave (at Carroll St), Park Slope tel 718/783-4565.
Venetian country cooking at its finest at this husband-and-wife-run eatery. Standouts include beet ravioli, grilled sardines, saltimbocca and salt-baked striped bass. Invariably crowded.

Banania 241 Smith St (at Douglass St), Cobble Hill tel 718/237-9100.
French bistro serving brunch and dinner for quite reasonable prices; steaks and fish dishes, like pan-roasted cod, stand out. Average price for entrees is $14; cash only.

Diner 85 Broadway (at Berry St), Williamsburg tel 718/486-3077.
Located in a refurbished dining car under the Williamsburg Bridge, this local favorite dishes out a superb array of food that includes fantastic burgers, French standards and a wealth of daily specials. Kitchen open nightly to 2am.

Grimaldi's Pizza 19 Old Fulton St (between Water and Front sts), Brooklyn Heights tel 718/858-4300.
Delicious, thin and crispy pies that bring even Manhattanites across the water - cheap and crowded.

Heights Café 84 Montague St (at Hicks St), Brooklyn Heights tel 718/625-5555.
Near the Esplanade overlooking the East River and the Manhattan skyline, this mainstay offers a great environment for a drink and appetizers at the bar or a decent-priced American eclectic meal at one of the sidewalk tables.

Junior's 386 Flatbush Ave (at DeKalb Ave), downtown Brooklyn tel 718/852-5257.
Open 24-hours in a sea of lights that makes it worthy of Vegas, Junior's offers everything you can imagine from chopped liver sandwiches to ribs and meatloaf. Whatever you do, save room for the cheesecake, which many consider to be NYC's finest.

Moroccan Star 205 Atlantic Ave (between Court and Clinton sts), downtown Brooklyn tel 718/643-0800.
Perhaps New York's best Moroccan restaurant, offering wonderful tajines and couscous with lamb. The chef once worked at the Four Seasons , and the quality of his cooking remains undiminished. Entrees are generally around $9.

Peter Luger's Steak House 178 Broadway (at Driggs Ave), Williamsburg tel 718/387-7400.
Catering to carnivores since 1873, Peter Luger's may just be the city's finest steakhouse. The service is surly and the decor plain, but the porterhouse steak - the only cut served - is divine. Cash only; expect to pay at least $60 per head.

Primorski 282 Brighton Beach Ave (between 2nd and 3rd sts), Brighton Beach tel 718/891-3111.
Perhaps the best of Brighton Beach's Russian hangouts, serving up a huge menu of authentic Russian dishes, including blintzes and stuffed cabbage, at absurdly cheap prices. Live music in the evening.
