New York City: Queens

The most ethnically diverse of all the boroughs, Queens holds the city's largest Greek, South American, Slavic and Asian communities, thus some of the best examples of that type of food.

Elias Corner 24-02 31st St (at 24th Ave), Astoria tel 718/932-1510.
Pay close attention to the seafood on display as you enter, for Elias Corner does not have menus and the staff is not always forthcoming. This informal Astoria institution, with open-air seating when weather permits, serves some of the best and freshest fish as well as a myriad of salads.

Jade Palace 136-14 38th Ave, Flushing tel 718/353-3366.
Fantastic and very inexpensive dim sum. The har gow (shrimp dumplings) and taro cakes are a great place to start.

Pastrami King 124-24 Queens Blvd (at 82nd Ave), Kew Gardens tel 718/263-1717.
The home-smoked pastrami and corned beef are better than any you'll find in Manhattan. Closed Sat.

Uncle George's 33-19 Broadway (at 34th St), Astoria tel 718/626-0593.
This 24-hour joint serves excellent and ultracheap authentic Greek food, including some of the top Greek BBQ and spanakopita in the city.
