New York City: The Bronx

In the Bronx , Belmont is one of the best places in the city to eat authentic Italian cuisine.

The Crab Shanty 361 City Island Ave (at Tier St), City Island tel 718/885-1810.
While the decor is cheesy to say the least, the fried clams and Cajun fried fish specials at this City Island favorite are worth the trip.

Dominick's 2335 Arthur Ave (at 187th St), Belmont tel 718/733-2807.
All you could hope for in a neighborhood Italian: great, rowdy atmosphere, communal family-style seating, wonderful food and low(ish) prices. As there are no menus, pay close attention to your waiter. Stuffed baby squid, veal parmigiana and chicken scarpariello are standouts.

Mister Taco 2255 White Plain Rd, Central Bronx tel 718/882-3821.
Makes for a great snack or meal after walking around the nearby Bronx Botanical Garden. The tamales are the call here. No English spoken.

Sam's 596-598 Grand Concourse, South Bronx tel 718/665-5341.
Located just a hop away from Yankee Stadium, Sam's makes for a tasty, cheap pre-game meal. Stay with the chicken, jerked or fried.
