This is the godfather of all slam venues, often featuring stars of the poetry world who pop in unannounced. SlamOpen on Wed and the Friday Night Slam both cost $5 and come highly recommended.

People's Voice Cafe 45 E 33rd St (between Park and Madison aves) tel 212/787-3903.
Tucked into the Workmen's Circle Building, this space draws those in search of original music and cultural acts. $10 cover; seats about eighty.

The late Allen Ginsberg, a Poetry Project protégé, said "the poetry project burns like red hot coal in New York's snow." Make of that what you will, the thrice-weekly reading series held here features some truly, ahem, hot stuff. Closed July and Aug.
