New York City: Theater

Theater venues are referred to as Broadway, Off-Broadway , or Off-Off-Broadway , classifications that represent a descending order of ticket price, production polish, elegance and comfort (but don't necessarily have much to do with location) and an ascending order of innovation, experimentation and theater for the sake of art rather than cash. In the past few years, Peter Brook's Hamlet and an adaptation of Mel Brooks' movie The Producers have taken the city by storm, while lively, imaginative musicals like The Lion King, Kiss Me Kate, Rent, Chicago and Annie Get Your Gun continue to draw crowds and acclaim.

Off-Broadway, while less glitzy, is the best place to discover new talent and adventurous new American drama and musicals like the Blue Man Group's recent sensation Tubes . It's Off-Broadway where you'll find social and political drama, satire, ethnic plays and repertory. Lower operating costs also mean that Off-Broadway often serves as a forum to try out what sometimes ends up as a big Broadway production.

Off-Off-Broadway is New York's fringe: shows range from shoestring productions of the classics to outrageous performance art; likewise, prices (cheap to free) and quality (execrable to electrifying) can vary
