Lake Erie Islands: Getting to the Islands

Ferries to Kelleys Island are operated by Neuman Boats from the foot of Frances Street in Marblehead every hour from dawn until dusk, more frequently at weekends and during peak times (March-Dec; $9.50 round-trip, bikes $3.50; tel 419/798-5800 or tel 1-800/876-1907, ). Kelleys Island Ferry Boat Lines (tel 419/798-9763) offers a year-round service from Main Street, Marblehead, for the same prices. The Island Rocket (tel 419/627-1500 or 1-800/854-8121, ), a powerful "cigarette" boat, whisks through the water from Jackson Street Pier in Sandusky for $9 one-way.

You can also take the Island Rocket from Sandusky to South Bass Island for a one-way fare of $11. A better value is the Island Rocket same-day "island hopper" ticket, which allows you to visit both islands for $28. The Jet Express (April-Nov; $10 one-way; tel 1-800/2451-JET) takes a mere 22 minutes to reach South Bass Island from Port Clinton, and runs until 11.30pm in the summer. Watch for their discount days or take the boat after 4pm any day but Saturday and return before the end of the evening and the fare is $15 round-trip. Ferry boats are hourly by Miller Boats (March-Nov daily 7am-7.30pm; $5 one-way; tel 419/285-2421) from Catawba Point , at the end of US-53 N, to Lime Kiln Dock on the island's southern tip. Cruises , run by Goodtime (tel 419/625-9692) from Sandusky's Jackson Street Pier, depart daily at 9.30am and stop at both Kelleys Island and South Bass Island, for a round-trip fare of $21.95.

All crossings generally operate from late March to early November, though weather can interfere with these plans.

Flights to both Kelleys Island and South Bass Island leave daily from Sandusky and Port Clinton and cost about $65.50 round-trip. Contact Griffing Airlines (tel 419/626-5161).
