South Bass Island: Practicalities

Put-in-Bay's visitor center (summer daily 9am-6pm, call for hours out of season; tel 419/285-2832, ) is in Harbor Square, downtown, just next to the northern dock. To get around, as on Kelleys Island, most people rent either golf carts from Baycarts Rental on Harbor Square ($10-20 per hour; tel 419/285-5785) or bikes from Island Bike Rental at both docks ($9 per day; tel 419/285-2016). A shuttle bus runs between the northern dock, the winery and the state park ($1). A narrated jump-on/jump-off tram tour ($6) sets off from the dock every thirty minutes. The local taxi will take you anywhere on the island for $3 per person (8am-3am; tel 419/285-2311).

Hotel rooms are heavily booked on weekends and during the summer, and B&Bs often require a two-night minimum stay on weekends. The Stagger Inn B&B , 182 Concord Ave (tel 419/285-2521; $75-100), and the Commodore Motel , 272 Delaware Ave (tel 419/285-3101; $75-100), which has a pool, offer some of the most competitive rates. Camp for $12 in the state park (get there by 9am) or at the Fox's Den Campground ($25 for one or two; tel 419/285-5001) on the southern shore.

Food on the island is expensive everywhere. The grill meals and seafood sandwiches at The Boardwalk (tel 419/285-3695) are no exception, but this is the only downtown restaurant directly on the water. Just over the street, Frosty's (tel 419/285-3278) does good pizza. Put-in-Bay's wild nightlife - it really does get raucous here - pulls in revelers from the other islands and the mainland. Numerous live music venues include the Beer Barrel Saloon - said to have the longest uninterrupted bar in the world complete with 160 bar stools - and the appropriately named Round House. The Brewer , just around the corner from the main drag on Catawba Avenue, is a reasonable brewpub.
