Eugene: Practicalities
Greyhound lets off at 987 Pearl St at Tenth Avenue, while Amtrak stops at Fourth Avenue and Willamette Street. Eugene has a terrific regional bus system, the LTD (tel 541/687-5555, ), based in an expansive bus mall downtown, and the visitor center is also downtown at 115 W Eighth Ave (Mon-Fri 8.30am-5pm, Sat 10am-4pm; tel 541/484-5307 or 1-800/547-5445, ).With thousands of students to feed, Eugene has plenty of places to eat . Café Zenon , 898 Pearl St (tel 503/343-3005), has an eclectic menu filled with various international dishes; Chanterelle , 207 E Fifth Ave (tel 541/484-4065), is an intimate French bistro; Morning Glory Café , 448 Willamette (tel 541/687-0709), serves hearty vegan breakfasts all day; and the Steelhead Brewery , 199 E 5th Ave (tel 541/686-2739), is a choice microbrewery.
Live music is big in town. Jo Federigo's , 259 E Fifth Ave (tel 541/343-8488), has nightly jazz and serves Italian cuisine in a great late-night atmosphere, while funky, downscale WOW Hall , 291 W 8th Ave (tel 541/687-2746), showcases up-and-coming rockers. For a taste of the music scene near the university, stroll along 13th Avenue.
The Oregon Country Fair (tel 541/343-4298, ) is a big, hippie-flavored festival of music, arts, food and dancing, held in VENETA , ten miles west on US-126, during the second weekend in July. Traffic then is heavy, and even if you have a car it's easier to travel there by bus - Eugene's LTD system operates special services.
