There's no avoiding
LINCOLN CITY
if you're driving; the ugliest town on the Oregon coast, it sprawls along the highway for seven congested, dreadful miles - the legacy of consolidating five beach towns in the 1960s. In the unlikely event you decide to stay, there's plenty of cheap
accommodation
to choose from - the
visitor center
, on US-101 (tel 541/994-8378 or 1-800/452-2151,
), has the full list. For somewhere to
eat
, you're better off headed south to Newport or further north to
TILLAMOOK
, whose main draw is the
Tillamook Cheese Factory
(daily 8am-6pm; free;
), north of town on US-101, where you can watch cheese being made while devouring a cone from one of the factory's two ice-cream counters. Tastier cheese can be had just to the south at the
Blue Heron
(daily 9am-5pm; free;
), an increasingly popular spot where you can sample the company's pepper-encrusted brie before heading out back to have a close encounter with a rooster or donkey in a quasi-petting zoo.
