Evenings in Gettysburg tend to be quiet; the tour buses have gone home and many people choose to drink in their hotel bars. However, there are some good restaurants and many in historically important buildings. Dobbin House Tavern 89 Steinwehr Ave tel 717/334-2100. The oldest house in the city, dating from 1776 and once a hideout for slaves on the "underground railroad" to freedom. Lunch from $8, candlelit dinners are more expensive. Food veers between Pennsylvania Dutch and early American.
