A trail of theme bars has sprung up along Penn's Landing and the Delaware River, but the most popular place for bar-hopping is South Street ; although 2nd Street in the Old City is rapidly becoming the area for the coolest bars. Philly's growing number of cafés are spread around the city; South Street and 2nd Street again have the densest concentrations, though several have opened in Center City over the past couple of years.Cuba Libre 10 S 2nd St tel 215/627-0666. The Khyber 56 S 2nd St tel 215/238-5888. Philly's oldest and most congenial bar, with a huge range of beers; it's also a reliable place to hear local bands.
Last Drop Coffeehouse 1300 Pine St tel 215/893-9262. Trendy café, serving Philly's best espresso.
Society Hill 301 Chestnut St tel 215/925-1919. Tasty sandwiches in a bar with plenty of atmosphere, a stone's throw from the Bank Street Hostel . Live jazz piano music nightly.
Sugar Mom's Church Street Lounge 225 Church St tel 215/925-8219. Popular basement bar where the jukebox ranges from Tony Bennett to Sonic Youth, with a dozen international beers on tap.
Woody's Bar and Restaurant 202 S 13th St tel 215/545-1893. Large, friendly downtown beer bar popular with Philly's gay community.
